When You're Gone [chapter14]

[I walked over to his window and took one last look around. This was it. It was kind of like having closure, except I didnt feel any different. I still missed him more than anything. I was still constantly trying to hold in tears. I walked downstairs with the box and saw his mom sitting on the living room couch. I sat down next to her and set the box between us. She smiled at me but I still saw the sadness in her eyes. And she saw it mine as well.]

C: He really loved you.
S: I know. He loved you too.

[I felt tears coming but I made myself keep them in. not just for me. but for carol. I needed to be strong for her. she looked down at the box and I took everything out and set it in my lap, and set the box by my feet as I showed her everything. When I picked up the box of picks, she smiled.]

C: he ordered those once a month and I would always find a few in his pockets when I did laundry.

[I smiled back and looked down at the box again.]

C: you know. Hed want you to be happy.
S: I amhappy.
C: Sarah. Honey. Trust me, I know its hard. But you dont want to turn away someone who could really care about you because youre afraid that youd be disappointing Jonathan or something. Hed want you to move on with your life. The longer you wait, the harder it will be.

[The longer you wait, the harder it will be. Why was everyone telling me that?]

S: I dont know how to let anyone else in.
C: dont think about it. Just live your life, and know that he loved you and will no matter what.
S: thank you. I should get going.
C: alright. Youre welcome here anytime Sarah. Wed love to have you over.

[I nodded and thanked her again before taking the box out to my car and sliding it in the backseat. When I got home, Nick was sitting on the second step of my porch with his hands in his jacket pockets. He watched me as I pulled up and got out of the car. I watched him for a second before I grabbed the box and walked over to the porch. He stood up and half-smiled.]

N: Julie called me. She said you might need me.
S: I was at Jonathans house, talking to his mom. She had some stuff she thought Id want.

[He glanced towards the box and then back up at me. he started moving his shoe back and forth on the wood and stared at it, with his hands back in his pockets.]

N: so. Are weI dont know. Are you and Iwhere do we stand?
S: Idont know.

[This was the perfect opportunity to tell him. Nick, I cant do this. How easy is that? He was asking me where I stood and all I had to do was say, I cant. I was about to say it when I thought back to what Carol had said. Nick cares about me and I shouldnt push him away. I set the box I was still holding on the ground and clasped my arms around Nick. He was taken aback at first, not sure what I was doing but he quickly hugged me back and kissed my hair.]

S: I know what you want us to be. And if we take things slowly, thats what I want too.

[I rested my head in the crook of his neck and he hugged me tighter and softly whispered in my ear.]

N: that means you want to be my girlfriend?

[It pained me to answer. I feared that maybe this wasnt a good idea. Would Jonathan be okay with me dating his best friend?]

S: yeah.

i've never had so much homework in one weekend.
its insane.
but...i have no motivation to do it :/
