I was surprised that no one else had uploaded this little gem, so I thought I'd dig out my copy.

This was taped from Nationwide (the old BBC one tea time news magazine programme) almost 24 years ago, in November 1983.

There were a number of interviews done on the BBC around this time, as publicity for the special "Five Doctors" programme that celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Doctor Who.

I especially love the section at the end of this clip, where Sue Lawley interviews Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison. Patrick Troughton was always my favorite Doctor. However in all of the interviews I have seen with him, he seems a little ill at ease. I think he felt, as a character actor, he shouldn't be "himself" too often.

I think I saw an interview (also on Youtube)that may have been conducted the same day as this Nationwide appearance. Patrick was there with Peter Davison and seems much less relaxed in that one. I can only assume that he got more relaxed during the day (or maybe had a few drinks before the interview!), but Patrick is great fun in this interview, much more like the character that Deborah Watling and Frazer Hines often talk about, that funny, friendly eccentric Patrick.

There is also a fascinating little interview with Verity Lambert, where she seems amazed that this little series she started in 1963 had lasted 20 years, I'm sure she'd be amazed in 1983 if she was told it'd last 44 years (and counting).

This was taped on a huge old clunky silver Sony C5 Betamax video recorder, that I thought was deeply wonderful at the time! It was transfered to VHS around 1985 and copied to DVD in 2005.

  • bloody hell! remember audio taping this back then!!!!

  • Yes we had a huge Sony (I think it was called a C5) Betamax video recorder that was used to tape this. It was in it's second year of life then - I could not believe my Dad bought it in 1982. I had to settle for audio tapes before then as well!

  • No Tom Baker in this clip. What happen to him? Couldn't make it on time? lol Just wondering.

  • having just quit (2 years before) he declined to take part in the 5 doctors and all the related publicity. The photo with the "five doctors" actually contains a waxwork of Tom baker and not the real person!

  • Thanks so much! There isn't much footage of Patrick Troughton, so every little bit is cherished! And you are right, he seems very relaxed, when usually he seems quite nervous.

  • three great actors

    a perfect clip.

    RIP

    patrick troughton

    jon pertwee

  • too bad an 11 doctor episode can't be possible now that some actors are dead

  • I think Pat and Jon are drunk lol brilliant

  • Thanks so much for this clip! lots of fun!

To reply to a comment you made in you're description, Verity Lambert would have been around to see it last 40 years in 83, she didn't die until 2007.

  • You should ask 2|Entertain whether they want to include this on a future DVD release, possibly the Shada release which is going to have lot's of special features to make up for the unshot scenes (yes, it's being released. apparenly it's going to include 30 Years in the TARDIS).

  • @gothamcity29 Agreed. Furthermore, lets look at this logically. The doctor was born a male. Lived as a male, had a family as a male. As a Timelord, he regenerates as a male. A Timelady would regenerate female. If the Doctor could regenerate into a female, then, you could argue a Timelord could regenerate into any intelligent life form. Silly, huh? I think the smart arses who suggest the Doctor becoming female know this, but suggest so either because they're jokers, or because they're idiots.

  • If they made the Doctor a woman I won't watch the show anymore. It's a horrible idea. The Doctor has been a man for almost fifty years and it should stay that way.

  • @tomreid100 That was only for a few minutes at the end of the special, we need a full episode or mini episode where that happens i think

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Some things never change - Thank God! Bring on the 50th!

(and can we have the original theme back while we're at it?)

  • Patrick Troughton is the definitive Doctor. There, I said it. Not that other Doctors' aren't good, but Pat is THE Doctor.
