Lovely day so it was out on the beach with the Trex 450. The heli has a medusa motor, 401 gyro, sab blades and thunder power 2100mah batteries

  • MrChopper,

NICE autos man! I know that your first few times from that high up had you puckered up! I just started doin autos a day or two ago, from about eye level. once I get the feel for it I'll go higher.

  • Thanks alot, enjoy them, they are fun.

  • thanks man, any suggestions? I've got the same bird as you

  • Well they are very tricky on the 450. Firstly with the heli I have found that you have to have a really nice smooth running drive train, the belt needs to be fairly loose and lubricated in my experience. I find the heli autos best with carbon blades(I have only tried the SAB ones) I normally fly with woodies but carbons for auto's. practise the approach alot and I learned on a larger heli first as the 450 is pretty unforgiving. come down with lots of forward speed and around -4 degrees of pitch

  • then as you get close to the ground (maybe around 10-15 ft high you can start the flare. depending on the conditions (wind mainly) develop the flare to get to about 1 ft from the ground (this is the tricky bit really) I tend to take the pitch from around -4 in the descent to about 0 in the flare I find this gives me the most headspeed/hang time. if it is done correctly you will have enough energy to land nicely. If you mess it up going around from the late stages can easily end in a visit to

  • the model shop as you can strip the main gear or if the headspeed was too low already end up with a heli spinning around wildly! I tend to stick with it once I am below about 30 ft, if you mess up and are over soft ground (beach good, soft grass good, tarmac and concrete bad :-) )then an arrival tends not to cause too much damage and I have got away with quite a few poor auto's. In my opinion the 450 is tricky to auto to say the least but it can be done that is for sure. nice wind about 5-10 kts.

  • sure helps alot and I never practise if it is gusty, I find the 450 just gets affected too much by the gusts and it is too easy to loose headspeed. I hope the pointers help, they are only my opinion and everyone has slightly different approaches but these things are some that work for me. Have fun and as always glad you enjoyed the video.

  • the sand is forgiving to land but absolutely devastating for ur bearings.

  • Nice work! When I saw the approach of that first one, I was pretty sure you weren't going to end up in one piece, but the landing was really smooth! Awesome!

  • sorrywhen i switch throttle hold

  • i can't do autos because my tail akways spins to the left when I switch it in the air

  • What about sea water :)

  • jeez you're coming in fast. But it works, sure does look spectacular.

My descent rate with the 450 is lower, but you'll have more headspeed at the bottom than I do. Will try this faster ...
