I was aboard the USS Hayler, an American navy Destroyer that participated in the rescue efforts. This brought back many memories.

I was only 10 years old at the time but still remember it so clearly through the news coverage and I took a lot of interest in how it happened because I was touched by the sheer scale of the disaster.

@TheKennyj47: the music at the end, from distant memory is called "Requiem" A fitting tribute to the those who died and the the survivors that carry it with them. It's on the soundtrack album of incidental music commisioned for the series. I think the album was simply called "Rescue" and was at least in part done by Rod Argent, of 70's rock music fame. - I just googled - Robert Hughes and Rod Argent "Rescue: the theme music from". Moving stuff, only a few quid 2nd hand.

sad event cuased by cost cutting and cutting corners on safety.does anyone know the name the haunting tune at the end
Easily the best rescue program ever. You can keep your Seaside Rescue and Highland Rescue. Do this again before the Sea King vanishes.
