Giessen Depot was a Luftwaffe training base during the War, and post WWII, all the way up through August of 2007, it was a U.S. Army post, serving in a variety of capacities.

I was there from 91-93 and absolutely loved it. Depot was where I lived and worked, but Giessen and the surrounding area was where I spent my time.

In 2006, some old buddies and I made our way back. These are just a few of the clips of what we saw.

Apologies for the long barracks shots, but that was my room. The whole visit was pretty surreal.

I hope you enjoy it, and please comment about your time there, or anything else (Giessen or Depot) you want to see, because I may have video of it.

  • Thanks for the memories. I was stationed on Giessen Army Depot 74-76. Was in Darmstadt 78-81. Didn't think I would want to see Giessen again when I left. After seeing your video, I kind of miss it.

  • living in germany as a refugee through 86/87, i worked at that base. we had to leave our camp in grunberg-reinhardshain at 2:00 am every night, drive to giessen, and stand in line for a couple of hours to get a one day pass allowing us to work there, unloading trucks with supplies. that was until german government found out about it, and we had to quit, if we didn't want to lose government aid (bed, food, and 80 DM in taschengeld/month).

  • OMG this brings back so many memories. Now I can show my daughter where she was born. She is a HHS 2nd and 32nd FA baby.Dixie was born in 1992 there.

  • WOW! I didn't realize how much I missed this place. I was stationed here from late 89-92 in B Battery 4/43 ADA. The friends I made there are irreplaceable.

  • Hey! Was there from 85 to 86. Unit disbanded and shipped south. Barracks room was in the Shangri-La orange brick buildings. Used to put our stereo speakers up in the windows and "entertain" the formations below. I have some photos around Giessen. Did the Germans still have the gliders just outside depot when you were there? Could take a funfzehn minuten ride in a glider for 5 Deutschemark. I have a photo of one of the gliders.

  • Thanks for this. I was there from 97-99. This helps bring back so many memories. I would love to go back there someday.

  • @jeffhorne My husband, Kevin Fitzgerald, was in the same unit at the same time. We have such great memories from there.
