Couple of old Nationals comparing tone with a newer Donmo Tricone. Completely different tonal aspects and qualities that are all equally special. You can tell quite a bit from the video tests but in person the tonal differences are even more noticable.

Circa 1934 National Trojan single cone reso with 14 frets and wood body, Then the prized and ultra rare circa 1933 National El Trovador and then my beloved little Donmo steel body tricone that's disguised as a single cone Duolian type guitar.

Please see the full resonator article on my website

Look under gear then the article on National Resos, Reso Hunt, Finding the right reso.

  • Hi Doug, going to try out a national delphi

at weekend, what do you think of this model? regards Carl.

  • I'm not nuts over the Delphi. I would seriously try to test one of those new triolians. They might feel lighter weight and be slightly more responsive. I have friends that own Delphis and they love them. So you can't loose either way but I was not nuts over the Delphi or the Polychrome Tricone. I think the powder coating inside made a difference.

  • hi this is a great clip .....thanks for sharing enjoyed your site

  • Very welcome thanks for coming by

  • Im new at slide guitar. I just bought an Original Hound dog dobro. What type of strings do you recamend. I bought some "Dobro" brand steel strings and they sound like crap.

  • Easy answer would be DAddarrio EJ-17 gauges are 13-56. Or go to my website and checkout the custom strings I sell. Good luck with it.

  • are you using fingerpicks or only thumbpicks? The tone of those guitars is beatiful

  • very good, thanks !

  • "It's all good"

    haha right on.

  • Hey! I like this guy.. He not only show's the guitars off...But he also plays them. There are a bunch of people on here that treat vintage guitars like only a god can play them so they hang ithe guitar back up. And move on without playing them.

  • I want a resonator guitar! What's the tuning in the first one? (i think they had different tunings)

  • Great video and really nicely illustrated ! Clearly two different sound, I was at Fine Resophonics earlier that year and I could testify how diffrent two Duolians can sound even if made in apparently the same metal. Of course 12 versus 14 fret is quite different vibes.

  • Killer Tricone...wow...the right sound man... CONGRATS
