Drill a hole in 2 opposite corners of the shape to be cut, then use a jigsaw to cut straight to the other corners from the starter holes. Square off the starter holes and call it a day.

@chrispo624 a knife. you cant see whats behind the wall board, so its risky with a sabre saw. also the sabresaw cuts on the pull back, not the push foward, so it rips th paper of the wallboard out, and makes a really rough cut, and the cut is never that straight either, a hand held wallboard saw, or stanley knife is the best way.

i would never use a reciprocating saw for this task. these saws are generally used for demolition. they are rough, make rough cuts, and are un predictable. these video suck majorly. how many different videos can you possibly make out of using a sabre saw

Like someone else said, it is much easier to use a jig saw, plus
you can better see where you are cutting.
