DIY PID CONTROLLER FOR SOUS VIDE OR BBQ SMOKER This is a little walk though of how I put together a PID Controller for my modified BBQ Smoker as well as to experiment with sous vide cooking without the extreme costs of store bought units. The total cost of everything put together was under $85 and total time invested in installing everything was under 1.5 hours.

**I do not include schematics for the wiring. Please go by the schematics included with your PID controller**

**If you are not comfortable with electricity please do not attempt this project. It can be dangerous and I take no responsibility for anything you do**

PARTS BREAK DOWN

PID Controller with SSR control $45.00
K Type Thermocouple $10.00

  • @PrimeTime485 You bring up a good point. No it is not waterproof. What I did was cover the wire just a little before the thermocoupler ended up about 14" in heat shrink tubing and that has worked well for me.

  • Hi, I'm just getting ready to build my own PID controller, using the JLD612 and PT100 RTD for Smoker and Sous Vide application, basically similar to what you have. However, I'm wondering why didn't you put your SSR with a heatsink, I read most DIY PID controller use heatsink. How about making the PT100 removeable, like a banana plug or 3.5 mm, I'm not sure how that work. Any pointer?

Thanks for checking out my video! As far as the questions, I didnt put a heatsink on the SSR since I'm not really working it that hard. The crock pot that I use is rather low wattage and it holds temp well so the SSR isnt flicking on/off enough for it to get hot. And for the PT100 I have mine removable by a plug. Send me an e-mail and I can discuss that in more detail.

  • Great tutorial! I recently made my own in a similar style, but I had a question for you. Is your thermocouple waterproof? Do you submerge it past the metal portion?
