Here's some vintage footage of Shorin Ryu Gojushiho [also once known as Useishi] performed by Nakama Haruka [dob 1926] I'd like to share with you. Apparently filmed on the mainland of Japan [Yokosuka] and not in Okinawa as labeled.

Nakama-sensei, student of Okuhara Bunei, died on 10 Jan 2010, leaving a relative with same surname [Nakama] as his successor .

  • Okinawan traditional karate kata has been "contaminated" with variations for the last 100 years.... there is no way to know how it was done exactly by Matsumura, Matsumora, Arakaki Seisho or whoever.. there were no films to record it back then. Even if there were, who is to say that master didn't introduce his own change to a part of the form. Kyan sensei for example, by examining his students kata, taught it slightly different during the 1920's than the 30's and early 40's..

  • This is not how Chotoku Kyan taught this kata to Zenryo Shimabukuro. In his younger days Kyan did change things frequently (and would later change them back); also he would not teach everything to any one student, nor did he teach things the same. In his old age Kyan eventually returned to the original katas as they taught to him (but with minor refinements). He wanted to pass on everything he knew before his death. Thus, his last students most likely learned the most from him.

  • Excellent Perfomance, Great Master

  • Can anyone tell me, as there are numerous versions of this kata, the double fisted grab to above - then down (like a throw or defence against Bo) - Any information would be appreciated thanks.

  • This is vitually the same Gojushiho (Ni) as taught to me by Seikichi Odo. Very interesting- and so are the Tomari versions of Seisan and Passaithat are also similar to Odo Sensei's kata.
