Ubuntu + Compiz Fusion - the true next-gen OS

This short video shows some of the most advanced visual effects freely available today. This video shows a free operating system called "Ubuntu", running on my Dell laptop. The laptop cost me only £399 (that's about $200).

Inspiron 1501 - AMD Turion 64 TL50 (Dual Core), 1GB RAM, 120 GB HDD, ATI 1150.

Running Ubuntu 7.10 + compiz fusion. I also added some of the unofficial plugins (in order to get the space and snow effects). Again, ask me at the link above if you want to know more.

i have a dell 1150 and cant even boot the live cd it hangs up with the curser and a black screen lol if u guys r good with ubuntu just google my name ( bobthecatkiller ) should come p with yahoo answers n stuff thanks and nice vid 5 stars

Choose to boot in safe graphics mode on the CD, or, just wait 19 days for the new release, which works better.

You need a support graphics card for the Desktop Effects. Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 comes with Compiz but you need to install the manager or you'll only get basic choices (no cube, only the "wall"). It's the manager that lets you choose the various settings and effects separately.

two questions,

1) Does the water effect work with the ATI 1150 (I have the same card in my inspiron 1501 and I haven't got the chance to test ubuntu on it).

2)Where did you get that icon dock?Whats the name of it?

Actually, I've noticed that if you turn Wi-fi off, gtkrecordmydesktop works quite well.

Can the same be said for getting effects to work in the first place WITHOUT compiz activated? I can't even get the basic effects to work on my Parallels setup on my MacBook, my guess is the graphics card, which is an embedded Intel GMA chip, can't handle it.
