  • @danielsarason Actually "The Great White Hope" is a reference to early 1900s boxing in the USA, when Jack Johnson, a black man, was the greatest boxer of the era. Because of the state of racism at the time, the boxing community was hoping for a white man to reclaim the boxing title, hence "The Great White Hope".

    Since then, "The Great White Hope" has just been used to represent the coming of someone great, oftentimes in sports.

  • @chea1500 maybe white is supposed to be representative of something pristine.... no social or racial implications meant. Also, I think this was supposed to be for Gore originally.... but yeah I get your point.
