Joey manages to kill before she escapes into the seal hole. One of Billy's classmates, aged 11, happens to be wandering the ice alone. He joins the group and everyone besides myself celebrates with a cigarette.

I do not condone underage smoking nor would buy children cigarettes. I hope the schools and government of Nunavut will improve their education and outreach programs to help reduce and hopefully end underage smoking.

Before entering the sled, I had never taken place in a hunt and have been separated from meat by butchers, supermarkets and restaurants in the South. It is appropriate that I only now start to respect the animals that have been slaughtered for my dinner table after seeing what is necessary for their harvest.

The Inuit seal hunt has gone on for thousands of years. It is an important part of their culture and the nutrition it provides has kept their people alive in the hardest conditions on our planet.

Please don't confuse the commercial seal hunt and any animal abuse found there with the Inuit seal hunt. Inuk hunters kill as quickly and humanely as possible using the entire animal for their families and their community. The seals live a natural life and are not kept in an inhumane unnatural habitat.

This one seal fed several people and an entire dog team. The leftover parts were chopped up and laid out on the ice so the birds hovering above us could eat as well. Feel free to protest injustices you perceive of the commercial seal hunt, but make sure to separate it from the life and culture sustaining seal hunt of the Inuit. I may have not fired a shot at a living creature, but the honor in participating in the hunt is something I will keep forever.

  • SAVE THE SEAL SHAME ON ALL PEOPLE HOW THINK ITS OK TO KILL HELP LESS ANAMILS LIKE HARP SEALS

  • @lukeiscute100 Please read the top comments or my expanded description. A knee jerk reaction is the antithesis of what I was hoping to bring to YouTube by posting these videos.

  • okay for those people have not yet know Canadaian History. Inuit people and tobacco are part of their culture and it is very spiritual for them, if you have any retarded comments about this video, please make sure to do your research first!!!

  • I've never heard of it being "spirtual" in any form for them. It was only introduced to them less than a hundred years ago, are you sure about that? Smoking is one of the major causes of death and disease in the arctic due to cancer

  • I do hope they stop under age smoking in the Provence. I understand, he is part Inuit, and they might have different laws, but, that is still wrong.

  • Nunavut is a territory of Canada, and not a province. They are subject to many of the same laws of lower Canada and underage smoking is against the law. Due to only having 2 RCMP officers they are understaffed and do not enforce that law frequently. Kids cannot purchase cigarettes at the store. Billy is fully Inuk ( Inuit is the more than 2 plural form of Inuk ), and I imagine underage smoking will be reduced if better education and community involvement regarding cigarettes is dealt with.

  • You do know that this is their culture, and their ONLY means of sustaining themselves. The nutrients gain from eating seal is above and beyond. Living in such a harsh environment makes one burn at least 4 to 5 times more energy than the average person. The blubber, the meat, the natural minerals found with in the animals blood, is vital for these peoples survival. And has been such for more than few thousand years. The nutrients eliminates the need for vegetables and other things the can't grow.

  • Anti hunters, be quiet for once. The white man leave us alone for once let us do our surviving the way we have done for thousands of years.

The European man is just a leech to the real first nations of Canada and after coming to our land and taking advantage of this countries natural beauty you still try to take away our rights.

  • At least the kid shot to kill not to run up and club the seal like the "fisherman" or "hunters" as they call themselves

  • Respond to this video... Ha ha ha Those Dogs sure know their places lol

  • @lukeiscute100 STFU.Are u going to tell the Inuit that they can't hunt Seals? That's over 80% of their Protein man there are no Cow and Chickens in the Arctic.Stop being ignorant please

  • @lukeiscute100 unless you are a complete vegetarian this is the most retarded comment to make: the human race is at the top of the food chain. Since the beginning of our time on earth we have killed animals and survived wearing their fur. People need to wake up and accept that we are a part of nature and that we feed of it. The Inuit is the most integrated people that live in complete sync with the nature. imagine the seals were your chicken, cows or pigs we and would never have this discussion!

  • PUT THAT KID ON THE PATCH!!!!

  • Hunting seal has been practiced for thousands of years. In an arctic environment veggies are difficult to grow. Low lying berries (cloud-berries, blueberries) can be found but other than that meat is the only food group. Grocery store goods are heavily priced. In some areas a turkey can be $200. Not to mention half the year is dark. seal meat has nutrients to offset symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, caused by lack of vitamin D and mineral deficiency in winter months.

  • @bashildy It's not spiritual for the Inuit. Tobacco is used by first nations as a sacred herb when smudging. It brings thanks and messages to creator and is not actually smoked but burned in a dish and used to cleanse the person, an area or the smoke carries messages to to creator. It is spiritual and sacred because it is a piece of mother earth, that is being used to contact father sky. The other sacred herbs are sweet grass, sage and cedar. Cigarettes are in no way, sacred or spiritual.

  • @lukeiscute100 LOL

go tell that to the eskimos
