2009.08.28 - Just got a copy of the new Apple OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The new version is supposed to be faster and leaner than the old version, cutting a lot of backwards compatibility for older hardware and freeing up 7 GBs of memory. So I timed the startup [boot time] before the install, and then after ...

But I was surprised after I timed a few startup attempts (from complete shutdowns) that the previous version of "Leopard" OSX 10.5.8 loads faster than "Snow Leopard" 10.6.

Granted that Apple doesn't make any claim for OSX 10.6 to be faster on startup, only faster "Waking up" from sleep and faster "Shutting Down," I still expected the new version to be slightly faster on boot time since there's less new features and more emphasis on what's under the hood with efficiency and speed.

Also note, I don't consider myself a benchmarking expert, so if I'm missing something, let me know, but I'm timing from the moment I push the power button to the moment the Dock becomes usable.

  • if i update from leopard to snow leopard, will i lose all my staf ??

  • @magus2511 Generally it keeps all or most of your personal files and settings, although if something goes wrong during an OS installation, there's always that possibility you could lose your stuff.

  • That is true!!

    Leopard boot up faster than Snow Leopard. But in my opinion Snow works better in the go and shuts down pretty quickly.

    @VYauTube agree?

  • @elgransr Overall I like SL, but Apple made a lot of promotional claims to faster wake times, but nothing on actual boot time which is why I timed this to find out. Thanks for watching!

  • @Yamcha67 Ok I saw that company pystar and saw they got in trouble with selling PCs with mac software but i thought hell if i can get a nice PC and use the mac software that would be awesome! I just don't want apple to sue me. I think they should allow more people that own PCs to use their software because its awesome! Thanks for getting back with me!
