Nokia Smart Installer for Symbian is a deployment solution designed to ensure that although packaged in a small installer kit (*.sis file) an application can be deployed on a supported Symbian device which doesn't yet have the required add-on libraries. These libraries will be download and installed only when the installer detects that they are needed or that they should be upgraded. In particular this solution provides support for distributing Qt applications without embedding the large Qt libraries in the distribution package.

  • please help me ! when i install some apps in nokia 5530 xm for example talking tom , after successfully downloading . smart installer proceeds the installation and after some time the installation is automatically cancelled and the smart installer icon appears in the menu , clicking that icon does the same installation starts and '' downloading 1 of 5 appears but automatically installation cancels.. sorry For my extremely bad english but pls reply !

  • @saad6626 it is difficult to say what happens there, but if you are willing to investigate this, here's what you should do: Install a file manager app that shows you the full file system, then create a directory called c:\logs\ADM

Now install the app again (or start SI from menu icon) and let it try to install until it cancels. Once SI execution completed, go back to that directory and collect the log file you find inside. Post them on pastebin.com and put link here.

  • 10MB of data can take too much time to download via usual GPRS/EDGE connection. When I was using EDGE phone as modem to connect my pc to internet, the max. speed I managed to reach was 20kbyte / second. It will take abot 10 minutes to download QT on that speed. But that was max speed and that was EDGE. GPRS is even slower.

  • @scpmr You are right of course, that's why all apps using it in the Ovi Store recommend downloading over WLAN. And of course you only have to do it once. Hopefully the networks will improve in time everywhere as well, over 3G the experience is not bad at all.

  • @ltomuta If when installing the app, the phone is connected to the PC using OVI Suite (or PC suite) , will QT be downloaded via that computer's internet connection? Or the phone will still use wireless connection to download QT?

  • @scpmr Even in this cases the download will be done through WLAN/3G, not through cable. In the future it is expected that Ovi Suite will be able to perform the same job as the Smart Installer and deliver the missing components to your phone, but for now this is not possible.

  • @ltomuta Yes. It would be good if SmartInstaller were a little smarter. It'd be good if Smart Installer could detect if the phone is connected to the PC, and used computer's internet connection to install or update QT in that case.

Because nobody's going to wait 10 - 20 minutes to install an app via EDGE/GPRS, even if you have to wait for so long only once. Here, where I live, in Moscow, Russia, 3G is not widespread yet. Although cable broadband internet is widespread and cheap.

  • cool music :-D Who is the singer ?

  • cool music :-D

  • Very informative. I feel it is not a bad idea to push Qt by device updates.
