Self-studying Vietnamese Lesson 7 (1/2) Greeting, Hello, How are you in Vietnamese and Dictionary

Hi ^_^,

This is Lesson 7, part 1/2.

It's just a basic dialogue for us to study but it's not really a common conversation between Vietnamese people. Since we have just started to study words, so I thought that a really simple and basic dialogue will be better. I think we will get to the normal conversation - the real one soon ^_^.

If you guys have any questions, please feel free to ask me ^_^.

I wish that I can hear your voices so I will know what kind of your problems when you spell and read a word.....but it seems impossible. Thus, I'll try my best to help you guys whenever you guys have a problem ^_^.

I have a question: I thought "và" meant "and"; sp how come when we say "And You?" in Vietnamese it changes to "còn ban?"?. Sorry to have asked, but I really want to know its actual meaning; so that I can learn the language with no problem.

@MrManuelpr21 Actually, "and" means both of them ^_^. However, "và" only means "and".

1/ We use mostly "and" as "và" when we make a list of something.

Ex: grape and apple = nho VÀ táo 2/ At here, we use "còn" when there are 2 choices and you already had one choice, "còn" will be used for another remaining choice.

Ex: 2 people are greeting each other.

A: How are you?

B: I'm fine. Thanks. And you?

There are only 2 people, so the remaining person will be used as "còn".

I shall go and you stay here.

---> Tôi sẽ đi CÒN bạn ở lại đây.

However, if you want to translate "and" as "và" instead of "còn", it is still fine and all Vietnamese still can understand what you are saying ^_^. So, don't worry too much about it ^_^.

This may have been stated already, but the phrase "khoe khong" literally means "healthy, not?" to which "khoe" is an affirmitive. Also. there is an excessive use of personal pronouns in these Vietnamese lessons...they rarely use them.

@MrManuelpr21 còn means 'also'. và is often paired with 3rd person reference like asking "who is that fine girl và that other fine girl she with?"
