Update, 13 October, 2010:

The Hungarian Parliament passed a law about the nationalization of MAL Plc, and delegated a new substitute CEO who is obliged to report to the gvt.

More than 20 employees testified that the former CEO had been aware of the danger.

He has to face criminal charges.

You are right.

This construction was built in 1985 when the regulations were not strict enough. People did not know about the dangers. All they knew was that the plant provided them with jobs.

The company that toook over the plant claims they did not get the full report on the state of the site. It is possible considering the circumstances.

The gvt took really fast action as well as private individuals and municipalities.

People are offered new homes and free land to build new settlements. A sarcophagus is being built. It is supposed to be finished very soon.

We get help from neighbouring countries as well as from fellow citizens, and the main thing is that the sludge did not get into the Danube, thus hopefully our neighbours will be spared from a disaster.

The River Marcal which was reported dead is getting revived.

The gvt wants justice for the people affected, they made it very clear.

Thank you MAL for vanishing the place where I grew up and lived for 30 years. Thank you for making the lives of my parents, my sister and her family, my uncles, my aunt, my cousins, and many friends miserable. I'm lucky enough that I left Hungary years ago but it breaks my heart when I hear my mother crying over the phone, complaining about the alkali dust burning her mouth, nose, and lungs and asking me not to go there ever again. And thanks to the media for belittling the noxious effects.

Yes, I'm somewhat suspicious of this "Accident"! Way too many so-called natural disasters going on at the same time! If this reaches the Danube river, whole of Southern Eastern Europe water poisened! Passing, Croatia, Bulgaria, Moldova into the Black Sea! Very very nasty!
