Hello, I'm George Smith jr. The Garner Park images and sounds I love are presented here. I started going to Garner in the summer of 1955 when we stopped there for a swim coming back from the Grand canyon to our home in Cloverleaf near Houston. We were amazed at the place. All of us, my Mom, Dad, brother Dan Smith and our friend Emma Burris first saw it together. It was like an Oasis in a hot dry Texas.. Even at my age of 67 I still get that special feeling that only came when we were at Garner State Park. I wish I could also put the smells here, camp fires at night with the sound of music in the air from the dance Pavilion. Sometimes at night the sky would light up with streaks of lightning, then you better get back to camp, the storm will come over Baldy mt. really fast. In the mornings, the girls with hair bonnets on would start emerging to the smell of bacon and eggs cooking , The park would slowly come alive. Then In the evening the swimming stopped and all the girls headed to the showers and would come out dressed for the dance. The walk through the trees as the sun set to get your favorite spot at the dance floor was always exciting, who will I meet there? If you were lucky after the dance you would walk a pretty girl back to her camp site making plans to meet tomorrow for a horse ride or to climb baldy. This was a magical and simple time for teenagers. So much Magic that years later I married a girl I camped by "Linda Mathes" and we have 2 grown kids Robyn and Bradley and grand kids, we were together 17 yrs. Yes Magic because I later Married the girl that first saw Garner with my family, "Emma Burris". Now years later My present wife whom I love very much "LaeLonne" is very special and tolerant of my memories of Garner Park. We might take the the big Motorhome there this summer, but that will somewhat diminish the magical feeling. However I can't afford any more Magic, you now know what I mean. Take a chance, go to Garner.

Thanks for the memories. Your pics look a lot like ours. We went every year from 1962-1982. Now we live in the hill country 1 1/2 hours away from Garner. It is such a magical place and for me there is no better vacation.
