While antiquing, bought some doilies (sp?) and used them with slab roller today to put a pattern in the clay. Then made test tiles out of them. It gives you a good idea of how the glazes and stains will look on different surfaces.
Made a nice little vase also plus did some plaster work making male and then female molds. Tired!!!!

I have an old retractable, pivoting, 2-sided shaving mirror by teaching wheel, it helps alot with all the positioning.
I purchased it at yard sale but have seen them a thrift stores. Do they have second hand stores there? What about a Barber do they use them I wonder?
Best of luck! Simon

I like this Trim Chuck very much Simon,
Thank you.
I try to get my long term students to make their own chucks, but I've only really used hour glass shapes, this cone shape is a nice idea!
My first Raku pot was a Winter tea bowl, drinking vessel, 30 odd years ago, I still have it!
We did Raku or "UKAR" this weekend for the first time in a couple of years,
3 nice pieces.
U R inspirational Simon!
I hope to get a slide show together of my work, to post on Utube soon.

Thanks, Simon.
I'm going to make one of them. They make a lot of sense from the standpoint of keeping the 'pot' round and it can accommodate a wide range of diameters. Once it has been bisqued, I guess you will mount it on a clay pad like you do your bats.

Queridísimo Simon: ¿Cuando nos darás una sorpresa hablando en español?, los españoles también te queremos.
Besos muy grandes.

You should get a Giffin Grip! Joking.
Cheers, Andrew.

very interesting use of a chuck, never thought of using one besides for bottles or uneven rimmed pots thanks for that bit of info very nice i'll have to try that sometime

Hi Simon,
These are great tips, I am still having trouble with "tap" centering but this looks like it will make it alittle easier. I'm going to try with my next batch. Besides my rims are always getting mushed after trying to center so much so this looks like it is a good preventative to that. Thanks again.
Warm (actually hot, almost 90 degrees today)regards from Debbie in Florida . . . P.S. your studio is lookin' good, lots of hard work I'm sure.

I really like this idea and I love those small cups.

Good show Simon, thanks!

I didn't have room to add this so here goes. The inst. of class is firing a chuck for it. It has an hourglass shape with open ends, one bigger than the other to use on various pieces. I'm borrowing one now. My work seems to scoot a bit. Do I need to add more clay coils or is my clay possibly too hard? Also, what is the name of the tool you use here? Instr. has one like it. I want one but can't find it. Does it have a name? If so, can you share it? I want to buy one b/c it works great.

I learned in college that using the plastic lid from a soda bottle will work for trimming pots. Instead of one using a finger, just place the plastic lid on the pot one is trimming. I find that my finger spins easier and does not get the friction like it does on the clay. It works best if you have your finger on the top side of the plastic lid.
Simon,
If you were to move your mirror to the left abit wld it work with camera angle and you looking at it too?
Just guessing!

Nice video, as usual, Simon. I couldn't hear whether your chuck is bisqued or greenware.

Great stuff.
What is the advantage in using a chuck for these cups as opposed to wetting the rim and sticking it to the head?
I thought chucks were for trimming bottles, or awkward shapes.

Hi - chuck helps to keep the pot round, is quick to use as its already on centre,as the pot is held on the inner edge it helps to prevent the pot getting that rather flat edge -rim after going face down on the wheelhead. SL
