Dog Training -Teaching a dog to Watch an object

http://www.sitmeanssit.com On this daily dog training video, I show some of the beginning steps with my 1 year old Labrador Retriever on how to 'Mark' an object.




This dog will later be running hunt tests, and I like to be able to come to the line and teach him to stay dialed in on an object. Having the ability to keep a dog's head where the object falls initially, and then later practicing this around distraction, makes the chance of the dog finding the spot where it falls easier, and it's one less thing that you have to worry about with distraction when you get to the line.

In later videos, you will see a lot more refinement of this. I am moving around the dog because at this stage of the game, I am actually the distraction and I want the dog concentrating on the mark even though I am moving or something else might be moving around him. He can clearly see it, as it is just a small toss right in front of him.

This is being done for a longer period of time as it gives the dog more chance for options and helps him dial it in easier.
This is just the first phase of this, and you will also see it done with my 2 year old Belgian Malinois. This drill will be perfected in later videos so that you can see it out of motion, and from different angles and different positions.
'Mark' or 'Watch' should be treated as a very thoroughly trained command just like other commands. It's obviously a lot more difficult, if you do not have the knowledge or the know how to control a dog in very fine movements like even his head.

The watch or mark command is a skill to have no matter what kind of dog you have. The great part is, it can be learned at such an accelerated rate now compared to the "olden days"
