This is the first in a series of videos on the basics of Stereoscopic 3D video production. In this video Alister Chapman, designer of the Genus Hurricane Rig explains how we see in 3D and how this transfers into 3D production techniques. Other videos in the series cover 3D space, screen size, disparity, convergence, cameras and the Derobe method for very simple yet effective 3D production.

you forgot to speak about LIGHT as a depth cue, no one thinks about how essential light is to a 3d image because of how light volumizes an object. watch a concert in difference mode, and watch what happens to the image when lights hit the people. you might even put light on top of your depth cue list after doing that test.

Yes I should have included contrast along with colour (I did have it on the caption). The volumetric effect you get with atmospheric lighting is actually a combination of the contrast and parallax cues. It's great in a smokey room as the effect fills the entire scene. Once I get all the other videos done (there should be 6 in total when I'm done) I'll re-visit that bit and add a note about contrast.

Very nice introduction Alister. It allows us to think and imagine further the differences between true 3D image and the stereoscopic illusion. In many ways similar to sound in spacel vs. stereo audio - again - illusion. Thanks.
