An Apple Lisa 1 is booted and both Twiggy 5.25" diskette drives are tested.
The Lisa 1 was one of the first personal computers sold with a graphical user interface: it reached the market in May of 1983. Preceding Apple's Macintosh by seven months, it was developed by a separate team at Apple and targeted toward office and business users. Sluggish performance, idiosyncratic and unreliable storage media (5.25" 'Twiggy' diskettes), anticipation of the Macintosh, and above all high cost made the Lisa a commercial failure.
In 1984, Apple offered an upgrade kit that converted a Lisa 1 to Lisa 2. This change mainly involved replacing the two Twiggy drives with the same kind of 3.5" drive found in the Macintosh. Most Lisa 1 owners made the switch, and hence very few working Lisa 1 systems exist today.
