how come these external hard drives are the size of a mni console when my 500gb internal drive is the size of half a sandwich

i had a 2 external harddrives same ones for more back up and the one died just before the 1 year warrenty and then the second 1 went 1 month after i was gutted

I have the 750GB. Works good, of course they always short you a few gigs but mine works good and fast! I edit video off of it on my PC.
