Funny coming from the guy that has the Iran Contra scandal on his conscience, bombed Libya, escalated the War on Drugs beyond proportions, bloated the military budget, etc.

@XEBKWTR Nitpick: Bush was hardly hand-picked by Reagan. The two were never close. Reagan believed Bush to be too moderate and weak. And he delayed endorsing a Republican until it was already locked up. Reagan would have preferred to endorse a more conservative canidate in '88 but was unable. In fact, Reagan handed the vice-presidency to Bush very reluctantly. The Bush family never forgave Reagan for any of this.

@ellipsis4321 Good points. As a full time student, my taxes skyrocketed. Reagan raised students' taxes so the rich could pay less.

The one thing that Reagan wasn't -- although he talked tough -- was a warmonger. Reagan lost less than 500 US troops in 8 yrs -- 300 of whom died at once in the Beirut Bombing -- he was called "Neville Chamberlain" for not going to war over it . RR had a respect for Peace -- something that this weak and fearful generation has lost post 9/11 -- they are constantly running on fear, thinking bombing more people will make them safer & stronger. Doesn't work that way.

@ellipsis4321 ---Soviets pretty much had a free hand in the 1970s--we were weary of any type of conflict after Vietnam, demoralized by Watergate, Carter administration was weak, and (to their credit) emphasized human rights, rather than political ideology (although this helped usher in fall of Shah of Iran, leading to the Islamofascists). So in retrospect, I think Reagan was right on a lot of issues

@XEBKWTR ---u make excellent points. Reagan did get the country moving again; the tax cuts at the timne were sorely needed to stimulate the economy. But the de-regulation to the extent it was implemented did lead to the S and L crisis, and the 1986 tax reform act ironically led to the commercial real estate market crash in the early 1990s. But Bush Jr was much worse fopr the economy, as taxes were much lower in relative terms than under Reagan.

• • • There has always been a place for mythology in American democracy – ... but this nation has arguably never seen the kind of bold, crudely calculated and ideologically driven legend-manufacturing as has taken place with Ronald Reagan.
It is a myth machine ..... – for misguided policies from "lowering taxes in the time of war in Iraq" to maintaining that unpopular conflict in a time of increasing bloodshed and questionable gains. ...
Will Bunch ... Tear down the Myth
... a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from your own; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. ... “An open letter to conservatives” tpmcafe talkingpointsmemo

Tax Reform Act of 1986 - bottom rate was raised 11 to 15 percent
[higher than they were at in 1981].
Top tax rate [over 3 M$/yr.] was lowered from 50 to 28%
... overall 60% reduction 1981-1989.
ONLY TIME IN US HISTORY ~ that the –‘top rate was reduced’- and the ‘-bottom rate increased ...’
