MATCH OF THE EIGHTIES - 1982-83 SEASON

The third from a six-part series, first broadcast by the BBC in 1997, in which Danny Baker takes a retrospective look back at the previous decade's football.

Big Ron Atkinson attempts to fashion a title-challenging side at Man United, who hope to be the biggest threat to Liverpool, themselves fielding a young and unknown forward by the name of Ian Rush. However, it's Graham Taylor and Elton John whose Watford side mount the biggest push this season. Meanwhile, Bobby Robson leaves Ipswich to take over the England job.

  • Dam I remember listening to the Everton 0 Liverpool 5 game on my small radio on radio 2. I was sickend. It re-taught me the many lessons in how to accept disappointments. Who would have thought Everton would get any better next season.

  • 8:19 LOL at Derek Dougan (RIP)...trying not to go too overboard there LOL..

  • Pisses me off the way newsreaders in the 80's used to call football, "soccer"...

Thank god they stopped that shit now...

  • Terry, Maybe so, but it was the finest dump in the world. There was something very special about the BBG. 40,000 at Derby? Yes, Forty fucking thousand at Derby, we were just shit in this period.

  • Atmospheric? - Sure!, Much loved? - No doubt! But you have to admit the Baseball ground was a dump. How on earth they managed to shoe-horn +40,000 in there back in the 70's I'll never know.

  • Amazing!

    Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
