The meat industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the public about their product. But no amount of false propaganda can sanitize meat. The facts are absolutely clear: Eating meat is bad for human health, catastrophic for the environment, and a living nightmare for animals.

The Humane Society is lobbying to change this. But big agribusiness has created "Humanewatch" backed by Cargill, Monsanto, Smithfield Foods to malign The Humane Society and the animal rights movement to protect their profits. It's sickening.

This book is excellent and should be read by everyone, especially Americans. It doesn't just show the terrible cost of factory farms, but also how democracy itself is undermined by factory farm advocates in high places and with a lot of money to throw around. A highly recommended book. But it's not about animal welfare directly so much as human and environmental welfare. Animal welfare would take a whole other book. I recommend for starters Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz.

Ignore it or not, it won't go away

until we reduce our consumption and waste of these animal products. You don't have to stop eating, but it's easier than you think to shop direct from local growers.

...and Why do we buy a package of 6 porkchops when we know 2 or 3 will eventually get tossed. Why use 2 pounds of ground beef when your dish only needs 3/4? (and the leftovers will get tossed).

I eat a little meat, but not like most of America. The appetite and ignorance is disgusting.
