"Winged Generals And Crucified Angels"

Blatty's first cut of The Ninth Configuration included this surreal exposition sequence which was intercut with the existing image of Kane dreaming in the back seat of the car prior to his arrival at the gothic mansion. The scene, which was present even in the early drafts of the screenplay, depicts a discussion of the condition of the castle's inmates by two crucified, winged, Marine Corps generals flanking the silent shape of Kane in Christ-like repose. The officers (who appear in more natural surroundings later in the movie) were played by David Healy, brother of former Georgetown University president Tim Healy; and David Paul, Pepsico executive and a co-producer of The Ninth Configuration. The scene, which alludes to such otherworldly classics as A Matter of Life and Death and Here Comes Mr. Jordan, was cut from the finished film after its bizarrely comic tone provoked awkward laughter at preview screenings. Nevertheless, a distant image of the three crosses shimmering over water survived the final cut, and can be seen during Kane's journey to the mansion.

  • Yes, there's a similar scene in it, but I think it comes later.

  • The book. You mean 'Twinkle, Twinkle Killer Kane'?

  • It seems like it could've been inspired by Life of Brian, except that I know the book is from about ' 69, and it had a similar scene. I think dapoetmaster is right, because that scene comes LATE in the book, so it doesn't really belong EARLY in the film.

  • oK interesting but I am glad they did not include it. It's too blunt in it's presentation & narrows the film greatly had it been included...Good call on deleting this scene. It is interesting in parts. The visual of the three crosses, was very nice. THAT fit the film well, the dialogue & medium shots just tanked the entire thing.
