Dr Shinder Purewal is running as a Liberal candidate from the electoral district of Surrey North in British Columbia, Canada. Surrey North is a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that has been represented in the Canadian House of Commons since 1988. It covers the northern part of Surrey. It is home to 106,904 residents in 2001, more than 46 percent of which are immigrants -- 21 percent of residents are East Indian, the second-highest concentration in Canada


Canada's 41st federal general election will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011. Dr. Purewal teaches political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. His main focus is on Canadian and comparative politics. He has written extensively on multiculturalism in Canada, and ethnic and fundamentalist politics in South Asia. Dr. Purewal also served as Citizenship Judge for B.C. and Yukon region. Shinder Singh Purewal was born in India to a family of small farmers. His father was murdered when Shinder was a month old, leaving his mother to raise a family of four. Having noticed young boys from the village leaving for Canada, she resolved that her family would live in a peaceful country. They arrived in Canada in September 1979. Shinder was 17. I could not speak more than a few words and very basic sentences in English.He had learned this rudimentary English at the modest government school in his village. Students of each particular state begin their schooling in their own mother tongue, Punjabi in my case, from Grade 1. They must start learning the national language, Hindi, from Grade 4, and English from Grade 6. I arrived in Canada with the basic skills of reading and writing in English. While a student at Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey, he also attended English as a second language classes at a local college.
