General views across the southern end of the Gettysburg (July 1863) Battlefield, featuring the view from Little Round Top looking down towards Devil's Den.

The high point that is Little Round Top was captured with minutes to spare from advancing Confederate troops; if it had fallen into Confederate hands, the left flank of the Union Army on Cemetery Ridge would have been incredibly exposed.

When talking about the Battle of Gettysburg, Pickett's Charge is the most well remembered event. But the events of Devil's Den, Slaughter Pen and Little Round Top should not be forgotten.

Please take a look at Video History Today http://www.videohistorytoday.com , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.

The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.

Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

  • A lot of the Little Round Top 'history' is myth. Get a copy of THESE HONORED DEAD by Thomas Desjardin.

  • @Noonrider11 I went their yesterday for my 5th grade school field trip. I was on a rock with all my friends when i was kinda slipping while i was sitting i dont know what it was cause i would try to stop myself but it was really weird

  • Take it from me, if you ever visit devils den (and you should) with children, make it your last stop. It's hard as heck to get them out of there! They love climbing on the boulders.

  • @deerhunter59ify I've heard different variations of this. I've heard that but I've also heard that the towns people knowing there were snakes there told the children that is where the Devil lived to keep them away from the rocks.

  • They say that even in day time, if you go on Devil's Den, a confederate soldier ghost will push you over if you like you're union.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • he says much knows little

  • "Devils Den" was a name the townspeople gave it because it is said there was a giant snake that lived under these rocks and the people called it the "Devil". I read this in a couple of different places.
