The final phase of the Pacific war during World War II saw a terrible new tactic: massed kamikaze attacks on American ships by Japanese planes. But the biggest kamikaze attack of all was the suicidal mission of the super battleship Yamato, the largest, most advanced warship of the day. In this program, NOVA joins an international team exploring the grave of this magnificent vessel to learn the secrets of her design, her final mission, and the violent events that brought her down.

Yamato lies on the floor of the East China Sea, 200 miles north of Okinawa, blown apart by one of the most massive explosions ever to occur at sea. Altogether, more than 2,700 men went down with the ship or drowned after it sank, making the loss of the Yamato one of the greatest naval disasters of all time. Produced by Bang in association with PBS (NOVA), TV Asahi, the Media Development Authority of Singapore, Discovery and Off the Fence. • Why do we give interpreter's voiceovers bad accents?

  • @glynamus sure

  • @ratonel78 It was sunk by the planes because they got to her first. And it was all over in 1 hour and 31 minutes. Long before any US Battleship could come near.

  • @dhamrick100 dhamrick100 comment : so dumb.... f-f-s did u even look at the actual diferences between any US battleship at that time and Yamato ? Why do you think it was sunked by planes ?!?

  • not the greatest battleship, just the largest, with their superior fire control the U.S. fast battleship could have gone toe to toe with the yamatos anyday.

  • her and her sisters were junk. the all or nothing armour concept was not going to give the jap navy the advantage they needed. it was just a big huge target for the u.s. navy. dumb idea and should of never been built. but i am glad they was stupid to build them. helped shortn the war at sea.

  • The greatest loss of life on a ship during World War II was the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustaf.

  • second world war was the end of dreadnaught era

  • 300 american aircraft and tooney's fleet sunk it :)

  • that could be the most wastful amount of good work that went into creating something so awesome that turned into something so useless
