Brookfield, Vermont's Al Wilder explains the history of harvesting ice from Sunset Lake. Jon Binhammer, Al's "ice harvest minion" protege and organizer for future festivals demonstrates cutting and removing an ice block from the frigid waters on January 29, 2011. Historically Brookfield's ice was shipped to Boston via the nearby Randolph train station (now an Amtrak stop) for refrigeration and clipper ship ballasts. Brookfield's ice was considered so clear that you could read the Boston Globe through it! Brookfield (pop. 1,222) in Central VT has the US's only floating wooden bridge and is known as the geographical center of Vermont.
