The reason for this replacement was that the "chocolate chip" pattern was designed around the southwestern U.S., so it didn't blend in as well in the middle east. Further more, it was more expensive to make as it had 6 colors, twice as many as the "coffee stain" design.

The "chocolate chip" camo that is associated with U.S. forces in Desert Storm had two shades of sand-brown, two reddish-brown, and white spots. Each white spot was partially surrounded by a black line.The "chocolate chips" were supposed to mimic rocks. In 1992 this pattern was replaced with the three color "coffee stain" pattern which was similar, but lacked the "chocolate chips" and one of the reddish-brown colors
