What caught my eye about this piece was the unusual arrangement of instruments. Flute, viola, harp. And somehow, Debussy created a beautiful piece of work that will forever be captured in my heart.

where's the sul ponticello?

@jbrahms1833 introspection and sadness that pervades....Whats wrong with you, you analytical dingleberry?

read Debussy's letters(about 2000...) and you understand the man and his music.
Intelligent ,authentic,original,and sometimes very funny.
One of the truly great artists!!

Flute, viola, and harp is also unusual. Debussy works magic with these instruments. The introspection and sadness that pervade the entire work is overwhelming at times. Listen to Golliwog's Cakewalk or Girl with the Flaxen Hair to cheer up.

"I don't know whether to laugh or to cry with this work, perhaps both things at the same time" wrote Debussy about this wonderful, dreaming score

The whole sonata is my favourite piece of music ever. It transcends everything. What an unexpectantly triumphant ending too!
