We have had gay marriage in Canada for a while now. It has not effected straight marriage. I am curious to see though if it will effect divorce.
Personally as a gay man I'm ore concerned about single people's rights. People tend to be embarrassed about being single so it's not discussed much. Single shaming is similar to fat shaming.

I don't agree with you about single shaming being similar to fat shaming, but there is definitely a stigma around being single and a pressure to pair off monogamously. Doing so is even incentivised by states offering married couples tax breaks and other benefits that aren't accessible to single people or alternative families. - B

My boyfriend and I are both Christians. We attend a Church in Nottingham that is totally for equal marriage and believe that marriage is about love, not gender. For us, marriage is important. He is going to be a Minister of Religion one day and for us to have a life together, we have to be married, which we're doing anyway but ofc for other reasons! :)
The one thing that REALLY frustrates me is GayPride. If we're so set on equality, why have an entire day separating it from everyone else?

I'm glad you're in favour of equal marriage, but I have to say I find your comment about gay pride quite hurtful and ignorant. For many pride is an act of protest. We are still far from a place where publicly visible homosexuality is accepted, or in many places even tolerated. And although a lot of Western prides have become highly commercialised party-like events, there are numerous countries where attending a pride parade can mean imprisonment or death. - Becca

Oh okay I think I understand. Theoretically no I don't think it has to, but as things actually are I think there's a strong case to be made that it does. At least that's my understanding of those who object to same sex/gender marriage on anti-assimilationist grounds - that it separates out the 'normal' gay couples who are wholesome, non-threatening and just like straight couples except for gender, from the radical queers who conservatives fear. - B

my second point i think (its been a while since i saw it) was does marriage create a narrative of moral discourse?
does marriage mean society trying to get one group of ppl to act or appear to be like another ie normalisation?
in other words does marriage impose societys ideals on a couple ie heteronormative values and norms?

I'd just get the law out of marriage. I don't see a need for it at all. It just seems to financially disincentives the "bread winner" from leaving the non "bread winner" and the reverse for the reverse.
I don't like tax relief for married couples it encourages people to get married stay married and have kids. I don't want to encourage you or discourage you from any of that.
Nor do i wan't the state (special bodies of armed men) to decide who can and can't get married, or define what it is.

Feminists aren't 'supposed' to be anything apart from in favour of/working towards gender and other equality. - Becca

It may well be, and I know a few people who would be glad to see it go, but while it's here it should be here for everyone. - Becca
