@thefoamycherry They were not wives, though. They were slaves. Once they had a kid with the sultan it was out the window with them and on to the next lady. Not kidding, this was how it worked. The only one that somehow managed to stay afloat was Roxelana, who actually managed to get married (!) with Suleyman the Magnificent. The harem must have been a miserable place with all those claustrophobicized women fighting to have their kids make it.

Ottoman sultans and court were Turkish and Turkish speaking. The majority of the poeple living in Ottoman Empire were not Turks, we Turks controlled much much more people then our own people, from Algeria, till Hungary, all were in our hands. Just like Great Britain controlled hundreds of millions of people.
