Matthews-Shatteen was a panelist at Different Donor Perspectives segment of Hack's NYU graduate course Development Strategies for Capacity Building. Matthews-Shatteen, Managing Director, Community Business Development at Merrill Lynch (www.ml.com), is helping to spearhead the companys community relations a role that enables her to turn her idealist concern into reality. Over the course of her more than 22-year Merrill Lynch career, she has held several positions with responsibilities that have included global philanthropic giving, educational programs, employee-related programs, and global diversity. She was the first woman and person of color elected as trustee for the Merrill Lynch Foundation. She currently serves as trustees at the University of Dayton; is a director of the International Women's Forum and the Executive Leadership Council; and is the immediate past president of The New York Women's Forum.

In past years, she has served on the boards of Bank Street College of Education, the New
York Theological Seminary, the Ms. Foundation, and Wilberforce University, among others. In July
1990, Mayor David Dinkins appointed her to a four-year term as a Member of the Board of Education
for the City of New York. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in education at the University of Dayton,
Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago, and served as a postdoctoral research fellow at
both Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The recipient of numerous
awards and recognitions including two honorary doctorates, she has been interviewed or featured
in the New York Times, Working Women, Financial World, Bloomberg, Essence, Black Enterprise,
WomensBiz.US and Ebony. Ms. Matthews-Shatteen also is the author of three books in the Have a
Little Faith series.
