Little heard track played at early gigs circa 83.Criminaly left off debut album...Enjoy x

Jeane
The low-life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets
To a room with it's cupboard bare

Jeane
I'm not sure what happiness means
But I look in your eyes
And I know
That it isn't there

We tried, we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried

Jeane
There's ice on the sink where we bathe
So how can you call this a home
When you know it's a grave ?

But you still hold a greedy grace
As you tidy the place
But it'll never be clean
Jeane

We tried, we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried

Oh ...
Cash on the nail
It's just a fairytale
Oh ...
And I don't believe in magic anymore
Jeane

But I think you know
I really think you know
Oh ...
I think you know the truth
Jeane

Oh ...

No heavenly choir
Not for me and not for you
Because I think that you know
I really think you know
I think you know the truth
Oh ...
Jeane

That we tried, and we failed
That we tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
Oh ...
Oh ...
Jeane

  • What a great song and what a great video, well done! This is one of several Smiths songs that is so matter-of-factly PERFECT that most of the world seems to have simply not noticed....

  • @thenewmasses Thank you...It's apreciated.

  • where was this song originally released... it used to be on a juke box in Whitley Bay as a b side until the pub was sanitised and naturally the song didn't survive ... class song

  • This was the b-side to This Charming Man

  • Words cannot express the admiration and awe I have for what Johnny Marr was doing at such a young age. Barely into his 20s and writing the most memorable guitar songs I have ever heard.

  • i went to see THE CRIBS a couple months back, here in a tiny club in hollywood, wearing my JOHNNY MARR t shirt...when johnny looked down and saw it, he smiled broadly, gave me a thumbs up (whilst still playing!), and said "nice one mate!".

    my life is now complete!

  • I wonder why this song was never on any of the thousand Smiths compilations that came out (or was it?). Great song.

  • Rare photos... WHERE can I find these???

  • Girl, I wish someone could unexpectedly find an entire trough of unreleased songs from The Smiths. Those two should've put their egos, or whatever, aside and given us more. Those few albums they released just wasn't enough. Shame on them for denying us a 20+ year career full of unforgettable music.

  • Belissima música; poesia pura!!!
