Mama Sranan, Suriname our mother

Poetry written by Elfriede Baarn Dijksteel aka Jenge from her book of poetry "son ten na mi"

SONG WAN MA AISA

Mother Earth, Mama Aisa
We are praying for rain
For our farmland should flourish

The fish swimming in the rivers
Our cattle in the field
For our farmland should flourish

We are falling on our knees in prayer Mama Aisa
For our farmlands should flourish

Wanaisa hear our plea
Spirit of the earth hear our plea
You are our nurturer, our mother, we are your children
Wanaisa hear our pleas

POEM MAMA SRANAN BY ELFRIEDE BAARN DIJKSTEEL AKA JENGE

at times I wonder
if only I could be a Kankan tree
scattering my might into the farthest corners

or could I be the breadth of the river mouth
that swallows all the struggles
that would otherwise smother us

Ooh Mama Sranan
share a sense of the wisdom
of your darkest forest with me
and just a sheer bit of the strength of your rapid flows
that grinds the rivers, grin grin
at times
sometimes
I wish for another wind to blow
