This statement of Tolstoy's only proves that even a genius can say idiocies...

Tolstoy derided this piece as completely without feeling. I have to agree.

Was this supposed to be all non-legato ? or his own interpretation ?

My professor played this at a senior recital.

Closely resembles Vladimir Ashkenzy's interpretation right down to tempi, as does this pianists interpretation of the Op 28 Pastoral sonata, elsewhere on YouTube. He gets admirable voice clarity in the contrapuntal sections. Op 101 is some of the most inspired music Beethoven ever set to paper and you can hear Mahler's counterpoint style gestating here 70 years before Mahler. Listen to this, then the scherzo from Mahler's 5th symphony.
this is incredible difficult piece to play. I love the tempo, gives room to hear everything. Its a good version. Congratulations.
