1994 film "The War" starring Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood. Scene is when Wood's character Stu is picked on by the local bullies the Lipnicki kids. Stu's dad played by Costner pulls his son from the fight. Later as the two are walking back to their car, Costner gives away the cotton candy, which he bought for Stu's mom and sister, to two of the Lipnicki kids. Stu protests and asks why his father would give the cotton candy to the kids who beat him up. Stu's dad replies: "Because they look like they haven't been given anything in a long time."

I used the clip as an illustration for a sermon in November 2008 on Jesus' parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard.

  • 1:15 I fault all the idiots who are standing around not doing anything.

  • The soundtrack makes this scene a million times better

  • @nothinglasts007 They werent any better. But that's how mean people are. They thrive on making others feel bad so they can feel better about themselves. I know..oldest reason in the book, but the real reason. But seeing how the Lipnicki's father was, you understand why. I think the one thing the Lipnicki kids were jealous of was that Stu and Lydia had a father that couldn't give them much, but he gave them his love unconditionally.

  • @emptyNINE yeah type in the search bar The War- "How bout it?" and that should bring it up

  • They got no room to be making fun of anyone being poor when they look like they haven't bathed in weeks..

  • @nothinglasts007 lol I wondered the same thing too!!

  • i never understood how the lipnickis could make fun of Stu and his family of being poor and having food stamps when they looked like they werent doing any better.... the oldest boys wore the same thing and they looked like they didnt even own a house just slept in the junkyard.

  • @monilove5

I was going to write this exact thing about my dad. (He passed away 10/1/96.)

    Happy Father's Day. ;(
