Quite a bit of misinformation here. Enlisted men in the light horse artillery, and the cavalry, and couriers, and command staff personnel in the infantry all rode horses and carried revolvers. The hats that officers and enlisted men wore in the Mexican War were identical and they were called campaign hats or forage hats. The term was also used for the European style hats worn by both sides during the Civil War 12 years later.
