Chaplin composed the music, while John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954. The song was originally sung by Nat King Cole, charted in 1954. It was also covered by Cole's daughter, Natalie, on her 1991 album.

Chaplin believed that laughter makes difficult moments in life easier. Moreover the quote above is a quote given from the perspective of a director, since close-up and long-shot are film lingo. I don't remember where he said that, or where I've read it, but that's my dearest quote from Chaplin, and the best sentiment ever to have in life. It goes also with this song, that he composed, smile no matter what. He was a brilliant, beautiful man.
