Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.

This recording of Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu op.66 was made in 1928.

  • It's a mystery to me why Chopin wanted this superb piece destroyed along with his other posthumous works. I know he said they didn't live up to what his public deserved. Thank God Julian Fontana , his old Polish pal from school, disobeyed Chopin this one time. (In 1848 Chopin wrote Fontana that when he returned to America he should give greetings to RW Emerson, who Chopin had met years before in London.) von Sauer is a marvel.

  • @saunsnaen Myabe he had a premonition and just couldn't bear the thought of it being turned into "I'm always chasing rainbows" :-0

  • Lipatti had grt respect for him & couldnt see why he got such small venues when touring paris. just as now its all hype.Sauer left really te best rec of the Lisztianers we have along with Rosenthal. Those Lamond Degreef rolls are all fakes super engineered by technicians trying to cull a few shillings out of old rolls and reputations.D'Albert left some recs .Wrecks.His Emperor concertois a testament of a long gone time!

  • @lovesGenet I think you probably now by now, but De Greef and Lamond made plenty of real live recordings (as well as piano rolls). You will find lots on my channel. Many are very fine indeed. De Greef is perhaps harder to understand.

  • Thanks for uploading this historic recording.

  • As Chopin is, simply wonderful

  • SUPERB

  • Sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation re the non publication of the Fantasie Impromptu!

  • Sauer has a technic that doesnt exist today.. a technic made to serve music and not the pianist...

the absolute truth in emotions and the elegance that comes out of him naturally...

he gives as a true idea how liszt would play in his last years

  • Souverän
