In the inaugural National Conversation Series held by the Wilson Center in April 2011, the center of discussion was a white paper written by two active-duty military officers, Captain Wayne Porter (U.S. Navy) and Colonel Mark Mykelby (U.S. Marine Corps). The paper, "A National Strategic Narrative" contends that the United States should move away from such outdated Cold War strategies as containment and deterrence toward sustainable prosperity and civic engagement. This week on dialogue host John Milewski sits down with Captain Porter and Robert Litwak of the Wilson Center for a follow up discussion on the National Strategic Narrative. Wayne Porter is a captain in the United States Navy who serves in the office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Additionally, he is co-author of the paper, "A National Strategic Narrative," originally written using the pseudonym, Mr. Y. Robert Litwak is Vice President for Programs and Director of the International Security Studies program at the Wilson Center. Previously he served as Director for Nonproliferation for the National Security Council.
