UL Lafayette Wind Ensemble, William J. Hochkeppel, Conductor

Homecoming Concert "The Spice is Right" 23 October 2009

Overture for Winds (1824), Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847)

Mendelssohn wrote this piece at the age of 15. It was originally for 11 wind players: 1 Flute, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 1 Trumpet, 2 Horns, and 1 Serpent. It would have been a large wind band for the classical period, which usually consisted of only 8 players (2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, and 2 Horns).

  • Did you have a serpent in this recording?

  • I wish! We used a contrabass clarinet instead. I should probably mention that in the video description...
