Like many of you, I also was forced to watch this video (sometime after finishing "lord of the flies" - in 8th Grade) Our cruel teacher decided to make this our FINAL EXAM.... How wrong? Shown on the last day of school, we had 10 minutes to take it all in and then write an essay on how it made us feel. I can remember only feeling like we had watched something that we shouldn't have... Scarred!

The general tone of the early letters, however, was a kind of wide-eyed, shocked innocence. People at first were not so much concerned with what the story meant; what they wanted to know was where these lotteries were held, AND WHETHER THEY CAN GO THERE AND WATCH------ this proves shirleys point (-_-)

I can honestly say I would take the stoning for my wife.
I don't care what it is.... I would put my life in place of hers.
I think you might not be giving enough credit to humankind. I've seen some pretty amazing and selfless things in my time.

If you look closely, the people made a square in the middle of the circle, then chose her, and then stoned her to death. The government basically got everyone in school to purposely watch a satanic ritual at a young age...interesting.

You know....
it's kind of odd, because I remember watching this in school. And I remember thinking how random it was. I was in middle school (6th grade) and the teacher pulled ou the VHS player and TV and just tossed this in.
Even at a young age I remember thinking "is this appropriate?". There was really no discussion about it afterwards. I think we were reading "Where the Red Fern Grows"..... then we watched this video.... and then it was right on to something else. All very random.

Everyone I have spoken too has been through the same tramtic ritual, one girl told me they just put it on randomly(same)after finishing a chapter in Lord of the Flies, (more tramatizing symbolism most people experienced), by now we surely should have been able to upgrade our ed. system with better education methods than ones from 30 yrs. ago. (but I wont get into that), You were definately exposed to something unnecessary in a school environment. On regular TV For sure. In school, JUST WRONG!

This story was published in the New Yorker in June, 1948, and the mail came flooding in. People were shocked, appalled, horrified. Some canceled their subscriptions. Ms. Jackson's found it hard to explain that it was merely an allegory. Her defense didn't satisfy many people. Even her own mother said, "it does seem, dear, that this gloomy kind of story is what all you young people think about these days. Why don't you write something to cheer people up?"
