This is a lovely song by Neil, with actual footage of first world war soldiers. From the Innes Book of Records.

  • He is the greatest parody song writer I have ever heard. In this song he proves to be a great writer. Bottom line. Lennon and Bowie are lucky he didn't take himself seriously more often, although this song does have a tounge and cheek quality that makes it classic Innes. Cheers mate.

  • there's a bit of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" in this one. anyone spot it? :))

"but she turns her head on the boy..." - that part

  • With the laughter and jokes, there always going to be the a part that is non comedy - and there is nothing more scary yet beautfuly written showing the realities of WWI. I tried to find this track and couldn't find it...till now.

  • I'd like to know how they put the video to this, it just seems so right. Did he write the songs to order, or were the videos made up to fit the song?

The arrangement is just right, but I don't know why, why could that be? I'm sure everyone influenced everyone else to some degree, but as someone pointed out there is something more poignant to Neil's songs, and humour has something to do with it. A song is more convincing and real and sincere when there is a measure of humour. Lennon,Bowie indeed

  • WW1 had to be the dirtiest,cruel,meat-grinder war ever.I'll never forget the time ol' Jimmy O'Brien went to take a sip of cold tea and George SmithJones lower jaw landed in his cup!Right scared he was.

  • Interesting to hear a snatch of 'Turkeys' at 1:07.

  • innes is one of the key bonzos who seemingly was one of the main musicians who bought structured melody even to their most chaotic songs they would have been very different without him

  • Innes is great song writer for being a humorist first, but it must be noted he's a social satirist not a parody writer, yes some of his music is written stylistically the same as some more popular bands, notably The Beatles, but they are original tunes.

  • beautiful song. I knew the song before seeing the video. I was very surprised it was about world war 1.

  • Great to see this again, more Beatley than Oasis ever managed, a also a bit like Nilsson. Innes is fantastic.
