Remembering Katrina in the past and present. It has been five years since the Gulf Coast felt the fury of Katrina. Today, the Gulf Coast is still recovering. SWOOP volunteers documented the destruction left by hurricane Katrina in April 2006. This video brought the devastation of Katrina to NC. The impact and the emotions felt by the volunteers that made the trip to the Gulf Coast in April 2006 were etched into our memory. Eight months after Katrina, the destruction and the work still needed was overwhelming and it was hard to believe this was happening in America. One day into our trip we decided to purchase a video camera to help document our experience. It truly felt like a war zone. This video helped SWOOP raise money to send a small group of volunteers to Pearlington, MS in October 2006. Today, the Gulf Coast is still in need, not only from the lasting impacts left by Katrina, but the recent oil spill in the Gulf. SWOOP would like to say Thank You to all of our volunteers and to those that made this video and our work in Pearlington, MS possible. Credits are noted at the end of this video.
