The Top 10!

Game - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Song - The Almighty
Composer - Shoji Meguro

Notes: I cannot state how great and epic this song is. Like I said, it and song #2 are VERY close to each other, and you can definitely see why.

EDIT: It seems there's a lot of people who don't seem to like this song lol. the reason i picked this song was out of my own personal taste. I found that in reference in the actual battle and the atmosphere surrounding it, it was worthy of this position. It took me a lot of time of considering every other song to come to this decision. I'm not saying anyone can't have an opinion about it, just thought i'd clarify why i chose it.

EDIT 2: I realize that people seem to think this is a showcase for all the game music out there in the world, it's not. This is a list of my own collection of songs and how i see them in order of "worst" to "best". It's subjective, people... i make the choice, it's not a way to say "hey look at every song from every game". Another thing, i picked most of this music based on the musical quality (such as length of musical phrases, power behind the song) and i tried to not let my nostalgia take control. This is a list for the MUSIC, not the GAMES. On one final note (and I'm sorry for this long diatribe, but it's been a long time coming), i do like Shoji Meguro, and no this list is not one "featuring other non-atlus games" as someone put before, nor is it just Final Fantasy or the Tales of... games only, either. I have updated this thing plenty of times to include new games, ones i missed, ones i never knew about, and ones i found little gems in, so please, stuff it with the "where's the variety" garbage. If you want "variety" and "objectivity" then look for a list that isn't a "Top 100", and look for just the lists that ARE simply showcases of game music. This is not the place for such things, and it won't be.

EDIT 3: For the last time, yes I have HAVE heard "The Genesis" so please stop asking me if i have or haven't. As for why I chose this song instead of The Genesis, that song is far too drawn out and long to be enjoyable to me. It's a ton of the same tune over and over and it takes until over 6 minutes in the song before it gets to a good section. Other songs are more effective at being drawn out as well as being enjoyable (and no, I do not count Dancing Mad in that.) That song also suffers from the same issue of being overly repetitive and long.

Welcome to the Top 100 RPG Battle Themes playlist. This is a representation of the 100 best songs spanning my gaming history of RPG's. Some of these games, I haven't played, others I have spent countless hours on, but the music has stuck with me for whatever reason. I have tried my best to not have too many from one game or series.

This list was updated in April 2011.

  • Can we have a nifty bundle with all the top 100 songs in a nice megaupload package, please?

For what it's worth, I like your selection. It's hard enough to know OF 100 RPG battle themes, but to judge them must be pretty rough. If others didn't like it, they can make their own list.

  • @Ningyosai I'll see what I can do. Since this list usually changes, I don't like to do that, but it seems fairly stable now, so I'll give it some thought.

  • @Ningyosai

Just thought I'd update you. There's a link for all of the songs in the description now if you'd like to have them.

  • Let me ask you, how did you "judge" these track? Length? Power? Atmosphere? Quality? It's too vague. Naturally others wouldn't agree with you, especially that "atmosphere" part. And people did said: "It sound a lot better if you've played the game". If you can't at least describe how the "atmosphere" is, people wouldn't agree (since, if I'm not wrong, that's what scored the most for you).

Anyway, be careful. I'm afraid what you like isn't the track, but the battle itself.

  • @WallachiaTatari

Honestly, it's really all about the music for me. There's something deep and just... I can't describe it. It's dark and kind of "crying" throughout, like the song is going through pain. So, it doesn't have anything to do with the battle itself, since I haven't gotten that far in the game. A lot of people think I like the songs because of the games (like FF IX), but this list is all about how much I like the music itself, outside of that. (But I'm not perfect lol)

I'd like to point you to the video description where it clearly says the name of the song. Perhaps you didn't realize the video titles are saying which game these songs are from and not what the songs are called.

  • @WallachiaTatari

honestly, if the uploader had like the battle rather than the track, then this would've been even better judgment in my opinion. Game tracks are usually about context, and without the context of the game also being judged, you can say any piece is great, but won't have any meaning.

This track is pretty good by itself, but what makes it amazing is the battle. Of course you'd have to play the game to understand, but that's the beauty of it.

  • @lmaonade200 I partially agree with you, the battle does add to it, but I think even by itself it's amazing, one of the best tracks in Persona 4 in my opinion.

  • in all honesty, this song gives you the feeling of a long, arduous battle.

..... which is what Ame-no-murekamo was, REALLY EFFING LONG AND ARDUOUS.

  • This song is powerful and soothing. Passionate for the future, and nostalgic for the journey up until. It's a pure sound of closure, acceptance, and direction. Definitely deserves the #1 spot that it got.

  • I love this song. The tempo is fast, indicating danger and urgency while the melody remains slower, showing the need to keep calm and strategize

  • I wasn't crazy about this song at fist, but it really grew on me. Now I love it.

  • @lmaonade200

It's always nice to read such comments. I agree 100% with you.

  • It requires a very specific taste to like this song.

  • @tomenaki Thank you! That was very thoughtful.
