taken from the above website:

"S.L.A.M. is Save Live Australias Music, a non-politically aligned, independent entity made up of musicians and music-lovers.

In a bid to address street violence Liquor Licensing Victoria (LLV) has introduced sweeping changes with unintended consequences for the local music scene."

The 2010 Melbourne Live Music Rally (S.L.A.M. Rally).

MC Brian Nankervis introduces Paul Kelly & Rick Dempster.

Before the speech some of the members of the Liberal Party came out to show their "support". But the crowd wasn't buying it (for the international viewers - the Liberal Party is Australia's conservative party. Like the Republicans in the U.S.).

On stage for this event was: Kram (Spiderbait) , Tim Rogers, (You Am I), Missy Higgins, the True Lies, Brian Nankervis, Paul Kelly, Claire Bowditch, Paul Dempsey, Wilbur Wilde, Scott Owen (The Living End), Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) and more.

Sorry about the quality but this was shot on a digital photo camera, in a shoulder to shoulder crowd and edit in Windows Live Movie Maker. The clip also cuts out before Dempster's harmonica solo.

  • Well said. These ridiculous laws also effect country pubs who now have to pay, not only security, but extra liquor licence fees. Makes it hard to stay afloat, so they don't hire bands, or stay open late. the local footy / cricket clubs and small isolated communities are losing their community hub! Thanks SLAM for highlighting the effect on live music, we also need to remember our mates in the bush who are also losing out.

  • The country will get fucked over the most if these laws get out of hand.

  • a love supreme. Excellent post- i couldn't hear absolutely everything they were saying so its good to listen back. Thanks for sharing and go out and see live music whenever you can everybody!

  • No problem. It's a shame my camera ran out of memory so I couldn't film the whole speech (especially The Ghost's). Cheers.

  • thanks for posting - well said Rick Dempster

  • Go Rick, you said it so well, we'll be where you are! Cheers John and Lisa

  • If it wasn't for these pubs, PK would still be a taxi driver. ;-)

  • Well said, the public transport issue has more to answer for than the band entertaining the punters

  • No Mark Seymour he must be a fan of the Brumby not live music

  • It`s D.Js playing their doof doof music in nightclubs that`s causing all this violence. At The Tote and other Melbourne live venues there`s fuck all violence.

  • I find it interesting how Brumby makes out to the media that his vision for Melbourne is a 24/7 cosmopolitan city, yet he seems too want to destroy anything cultural that is distantly Melbourne (music, murals in the laneways etc.). This idea he has in his head of a "European city" is not going to happen. For one thing European cities don't have their public transport cut off at midnight on weekends and cause people to drink drive or wonder the streets like drunk zombies.
