In this video, Aaron King of GFC Martial Arts shows us a "bailout sweep" from the half-guard so that you can take the side control position or get back to your feet.

A variation of this technique was used by BJ Penn during his second fight with Frankie Edgar.

  • do u need to get the knee across to finish that? it seems like u could just hip heist out once u get him off balance

  • @VanAvery Not sure exactly what you mean. I've found that for me personally, the hip heist out of half guard is generally a failing maneuver (though that could just be me).

  • Do you think it is worth taking the knee bar midway through the sweep? It seems like it is right there for the taking.

  • @sunnsu Certainly is an option that you have!

  • This instructor is great. I have been doing BJJ for years and he explains these concepts so well. I love it.

  • really good teaching and details thanks for sharing @3:31 when you step on the leg why not just finish it there. What I would do is drop from stepping on it to pulling back and kneeling on it, then have a nice ankle finish

  • Very cool and very smooth. I could really see that working well, especially with (as you said) some other sweep attempts setting it up.

I notice you didn't mention taking the back from there. Reason?

  • INCREDIBLE! just like the sweep in the X guard. nice

  • I've seen Romulo Barral in this position. He just grabs the belt (gi) and sits on the back, or if nogi he let's the leg drop and grab the leg, but doesn't put the guy on his back. Just an observation. Love your no-gi videos.

  • love all your videos

  • nice move, good for a leg lock too :D
